MDC (VSFF) connector supports all 3 IEEE 802.3db Use Cases

Current duplex connectors do not support 4 duplex connectors in a single QSFP-DD package and 2 duplex connectors in a single SFP-DD package. A smaller format duplex connector is needed to support QSFP-DD/OSFP 4:1 and SFP-DD 2:1 breakout applications.

MDC (Very Small Form Factor) connectors support these new breakout applications and allow four connectors to be fitted within the QSFP-DD module, which LC duplex connector cannot accomplish.

It is a 2-fiber connector using proven 1.25mm LC ferrules, providing 3x density over LC. Adapters use the same port cutouts and sizes as LC, allowing current designs to transfer from LC to MDC. Leading in a new era in two-fiber connectivity, this trailblazing connector design brings superior density, field configurability, straightforward insertion/extraction, and optimal carrier-grade performance to the ELiMENT® brand single fiber connector portfolio.

MDC connectors are installed and removed using a push-pull strain relief boot. The boot assists in very dense applications providing easy extraction from adapters and ports. Polarity is easily changed without the need of a tool or exposing fibers, by simply pulling back the strain relief and rotating around the connector body. Jumpers are exclusively micro-size cables, and are available with alternate connectors on the other end, such as LC, for connecting to existing infrastructure.

Using the existing families of Classic, PRM, and LGX compatible panels or modules allows end users to upgrade in fiber density without the added cost of buying a new hardware enclosure or system. Simply swap out the existing panel or module to an MDC and plug in the additional fibers required.

Panels use an MDC adapter to accept a jumper or pre-terminated trunk on each side of the panel, up to 48 fiber per Classic panel.

Modules use a denser MDC adapter to achieve higher fiber counts over panels. A standard Classic MDC module provides 72 fibers, using 12 MDC adapter ports at 6 fibers each, with 6 MTP® ports on the back. Standard modules use pinned (male) MTP connectors and should be mated with non-pinned (female) trunk cables.

OFNR vs. OFNP

Cable jackets are comprised of different materials based on different applications. Plastics used in the structure of plenum cable in the United States are regulated under the National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 90A: Standard for the Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems. All materials planned for use on wire and cables to be placed in plenum spaces are intended to meet rigorous fire safety test standards by NFPA 262 and outlined in NFPA 90A.

OFNR (Optical Fiber Non-conductive Riser)

Used in riser applications or spaces inside a building in pathways that pass between floors, such as a vertical zone or space. They are engineered to prevent a fire from spreading from floor to floor within buildings. OFNR cable is resistant to oxidation and degradation. It gives off heavy black smoke, hydrochloric acid, and other toxic gases when it burns. It is fine to use as a patch cord or for single in-wall runs. If you want to use it in a building, the building must feature a contained ventilation system and have good fire exits.

OFNP (Optical Fiber Non-conductive Plenum)

Used in plenum applications or inside buildings in plenum areas, the areas between a ceiling and the floor above it, where space is reserved for the circulation of air. They have the highest rated fire retardant which emits little smoke during combustion. The non-conductive element within OFNP means they contain no electrically conductive components. OFNP cable has fire resistance and gives low smoke when it burns. It can be used as a substitute for PVC (OFNR) cable since its fire resistance is the highest. It’s designed for the movement of environmental air and is commonly used for vertical runs between floors.
