Researchers at the University of Bath have developed a mathematical model that explains the phenomenon of light guidance with minimal data loss in hollow-core fibers. Their findings, recently published in the journal Nature Photonics, offer the potential for the creation of novel, more efficient optical fibers with applications spanning long-distance communication and beyond.

Hollow-core fibers are a distinctive type of optical fiber that features a central void in their core. This unique design allows for the transmission of light with significantly reduced losses compared to conventional fiber optic cables. However, the precise mechanism governing light propagation within hollow-core fibers has remained enigmatic until now.

The novel mathematical model, devised by the University of Bath researchers, provides a comprehensive account of how light is channeled through these specialized fibers.
