What other products are used with fiber optic cabling?

Fiber optics require a bit more than just a cable and a connectivity box. DMSI can provide plenty of these for your application; but, let’s go over a few of them and what they do. A pre-terminated trunk cable, for example, is a way to connect multiple fibers for easy and fast deployment versus timely field termination. There’s also a fiber jumper, which is essentially a cable that allows fast connections to passive or active ports. Attenuators, loopbacks and adapters are used in similar fashion for connecting and testing; think of it as the equivalent of a Mac adapter. You need to change the type of port between connections in order to transfer information from an Apple computer to a system that only has a connection for a PC. The process is similar; some fiber optic cables have different connectors that need to be changed before they can be connected to certain panels.

What are the advantages of using fiber optic cabling?

There is virtually no reason to use any other type of network cabling. First of all, they use much less energy than traditional copper cabling. This makes them more efficient, and far more technologically advanced. These cables and their network systems will last for years to come, even if there is new technology on the way. Fiber also has the ability to handle heavy loads of bandwidth. Connecting from multiple devices is often necessary for high security facilities. With fiber, this is easy.

Fiber optics cannot be interfered with. They are not affected by electromagnetic pulses like copper cables. For this reason, fiber is incredibly secure, as it’s difficult to intercept information if it isn’t electromagnetically transmitted. And copper cables can be tapped without much effort or indication.
